41. Hindu Vows

A traditional Hindu wedding ceremony is elaborate and complex, incorporating fifteen specific rituals. There are no vows in the Western sense, but the Seven Steps, or Saptha Padhi, around a flame (honoring the fire god Agni) spell out the promises the couple makes to each other:

“Let us take the first step to provide for our household a nourishing and pure diet, avoiding those foods injurious to healthy living.”

“Let us take the second step to develop physical, mental, and spiritual powers.”

“Let us take the third step to increase our wealth by righteous means and proper use.”

“Let us take the fourth step to acquire knowledge, happiness, and harmony by mutual love and trust.”

“Let us take the fifth step so that we are blessed with strong, virtuous, and heroic children.”

“Let us take the sixth step for self-restraint and longevity.”

“Finally, let us take the seventh step and be true companions and remain lifelong partners by this wedlock.”

42. Handfasting #1

Bride & Groom, If you are ready to step into the holy circle of matrimony, assuming all its rights, obligations and abundant joys, please so indicate by joining hands.

As your hands are joined, so are your lives. Holding each other, Caressing each other. Supporting each other.

Take the ribbon and drape around their wrists and loop around to the center. and leave draped for now. The knot comes later.

Arwen: “Do you remember when we first met?”

Aragorn: “I thought I had wandered into a dream.”

Arwen: “Long years have passed. You did not have the cares you carry now. Do you remember what I told you?”

Aragorn: “You said you’d bind yourself to me, forsaking the immortal life of your people.”

Arwen: “And to that I hold. I would rather share one lifetime with you than face all the ages of this world alone . . . I choose a mortal life.”

Aragorn: “You cannot give me this.”

Arwen: “It is mine to give to whom I will. Like my heart.”

Take the ribbon,  tie in a loose knot and announce:

Bride & Groom, you are now bound to each other.

43. Hand Fasting #2

Explanation of Handfasting

Bride & Groom have chosen a traditional handfasting ceremony. In early centuries, before marriages were sanctified in a house of worship, they were celebrated by a simple handfasting ceremony in which the two partners joined hands over the village anvil, in the fields or in the groves of trees. The couple linked hands to form an infinity circle, symbolizing the entirety of the universe as represented in their relationship. Today, we build upon this tradition.

Bride & Groom, please join hands in the infinity circle.

Handfasting/Vows

Know now before you go further, that since your lives have crossed in this life you have formed ties between each other. As you seek to enter this state of matrimony you should strive to make real, the ideals which give meaning to both this ceremony and the institution of marriage. The promises made today and the ties that are bound here greatly strengthen your union; they will cross the years and lives of each soul’s growth.

Do you still seek to enter this ceremony?

Couple: Yes, we seek to enter.

Dedication (Blessing) of the Hands

These are the hands that will passionately love you and cherish you through the years, for a lifetime of happiness.

These are the hands that will countless times wipe the tears from your eyes: tears of sorrow and tears of joy.

These are the hands that will comfort you in illness, and hold you when fear or grief racks your mind.

These are the hands that will hold you tight as you struggle through difficult times.

These are the hands that will give you support and encourage you to chase your dreams. Together, everything you wish for can be realized.

Prepare the cords
